Sitting in the Bay of Ice off the north-western coast, this rocky, forested island is poor country of pine, bog and stone. The hall of its lords is built of huge logs rather than dressed stone.

House Mormont rules it, and because ironborn and wildling raiders have carried off islanders for centuries, Mormont women are taught the axe as readily as the men. The Starks gave the island to the Mormonts after taking it from the ironborn in the distant past.
