Stretching the width of the realm below the Wall, this territory was given to the Night's Watch by Brandon the Builder so the brothers could farm and provision themselves. Queen Alysanne Targaryen later doubled it with a second grant further south.
Its holdings owe nothing to Winterfell and answer only to the Lord Commander. Wildling raids, hard winters and the dwindling numbers of the Watch have emptied most of the villages, leaving good land lying fallow within sight of the ice.
