The castle stands on a headland and a scatter of stone stacks off the western coast of the island of Pyke, its towers joined by swaying rope bridges above the surf. Waves have eaten away much of the rock beneath it over the centuries.
House Greyjoy has ruled the Iron Islands from here since the days when kings were chosen at kingsmoots. The Greyjoys follow the Drowned God, and the castle's damp, salt-eaten halls suit the reaving traditions they keep alive.
