Running along the northern flank of the Red Mountains where the stormlands, the Reach and Dorne meet, the marches are dry hill country crossed by the roads towards the Prince's Pass and the Boneway. Blackhaven, Nightsong and Stonehelm guard them.
Dornish raids and marcher reprisals went on for a thousand years before Dorne joined the realm, and the border houses grew warlike to match. Marcher lords are still counted among the toughest soldiers in any stormlander or Reach host.
