Lying in the eastern marches near the border with the Reach, Summerhall was built as a summer residence for the royal family rather than a fortress. Its halls were open and lightly defended.
A great fire during the reign of Aegon the Fifth destroyed much of the castle and killed members of the royal house, and the place has stood a blackened ruin since. Rhaegar Targaryen was born there on the night it burned.
