Only a narrow band of land joins the North to the rest of Westeros, and almost all of it is bog, lizard-lion pool and shifting channel. The kingsroad crosses on a raised causeway commanded by Moat Cailin.
Crannogmen sworn to House Reed live here in villages that move with the water, and outsiders who leave the road quickly become lost. The Neck is the reason northern armies have historically been able to hold the south at bay with very few men.
