At the base of the mountain road below the Eyrie stands this strong, conventional castle, which controls who may begin the climb. The Arryns hold it directly and winter here when the high stair becomes impassable.
Anyone travelling to the Eyrie must pass through its gates, dismount, and continue on mule up the switchbacks. Its keeper is a trusted Vale lord, and the garrison is large enough to make a siege of the mountain approaches pointless.
