Standing where the Wall runs up against the western mountains above the Gorge, the Shadow Tower guards the approaches from the Frostfangs and the Bridge of Skulls. It is smaller than Castle Black and colder still.
Rangers based here patrol the wild valleys to the west, country that armies cannot easily cross but small raiding parties can. Command of the tower has long been a post for hard, experienced men, since help from the rest of the Watch is days away along the top of the ice.
